Mixed Recycling Bin

Residential mixed recycling bin has a yellow lid and is collected fortnightly on the same day as your general rubbish.

Place items in your mixed recycling bin loose (not in bags).

Recycling is one of the easiest ways to live sustainably and we do a great job of recycling in Baw Baw. Your kerbside mixed recycling collection is a service designed to assist in the recovery of resources as part of the circular economy and reduce sending valuable materials to landfill.

Sometimes it is hard to decide what can be recycled in your kerbside mixed recycling bin however contamination with the wrong items could mean the whole lot ends up in landfill or greater costs to process the materials.

What can I put in my mixed recycling bin?

Aluminium cans
Aluminium foil (scrunched in a ball)
Steel cans and tins
Plastic containers, such as:
- Milk cartons
- Ice cream container
- Take away containers (rinsed)
Paper and cardboard
Aerosol cans (empty)

Pizza boxes are recyclable but please make sure that you don't leave any food waste in the box.

What can't I put in my mixed recycling bin?

Plastic bags, plastic wrap or bin liners
Glass bottles and jars
Soft plastics
Disposable coffee cups
Plastic pots
Nappies or syringes
Pyrex, window glass, light globes, broken glass or ceramics
Waxed cardboard
Polystyrene
Hard waste, timber or building materials
General rubbish or food scraps
Car parts
Clothing and textiles (recycle for free at Lardner and Trafalgar Transfer Station)
Carpet
Items wrapped in plastic bags.
E-waste and batteries (recycle for free at the four transfer stations)

Buying products without excess plastic packaging or using reusable containers will help to reduce plastic waste.

What is contamination?

When we’re talking about our kerbside commingled recycling collection - contamination is any item that isn’t on the ‘What can go in my mixed recycling bin’.

This is because some items, even if they have a recycling symbol or code, are unsuitable for the sorting process and can cause damage to the equipment.

Items that can’t go into your kerbside mixed recycling may be able to be recycled elsewhere.
