Baw Baw Shire Council is proud to present Continyou – Conversations for growth, resilience and inspiration, a pair of free events this June featuring ultra-marathoner Samantha Gash alongside Antarctic adventurer David Knoff and local athlete Beau Miles, former AFL player and respected broadcaster Wayne Schwass and gold medal winning athlete and business owner Bianca Chatfield.

Each event will feature inspiring and insightful keynotes, conversations, and advice for developing and nurturing a resilient, connected, and socially inclusive culture in our community.

More than a third (35.4%) of adults in Baw Baw Shire have been diagnosed with anxiety or depression, a proportion that is higher than the average for Gippsland (33%).

This staggering figure was further reinforced by survey results during Council’s 2021 Community Vision consultation process which identified the need for more support for those suffering mental illness, greater advocacy for mental health awareness and noted the need to address youth suicide rates and further investment into youth mental health.

Council’s vision, as informed by our community, is for a sustainable, healthy and thriving Baw Baw where our people live in a safe, socially connected community and a healthy environment.

These events aim to support that vision and promote resilience, connection and inclusivity through the inspiring stories and experiences of the keynote speakers.

Both events are delivered by Baw Baw Shire Council and supported through the Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).

Bianca was one of the youngest players ever to have debuted for the Australian Diamonds at the age of 18. She made a name for herself on the court as one of the toughest defenders, winning both gold and silver medals at the Commonwealth Games alongside a host of premiership victories and awards.

Since retiring from the sport in 2015, Bianca has gone on to become one of the most prominent female voices in Australian sport working across a variety of TV and radio shows. In 2016 Bianca launched her first book called Every Girl Needs A Plan which seeks to empower women to find their passion, navigate through the fear of change, and nail down a game plan to make it happen.

Quote attributable to Deputy Mayor Cr Annemarie McCabe

“Emerging from the challenges of the past two years, we as a community should come together to build our resilience as we strive towards building a more sustainable, healthy and thriving community for all people in Baw Baw Shire.

I am so thrilled we can provide these fantastic opportunities for our community and encourage everyone to come along to one, or both, of these great events, come and be inspired.”
