The Warragul Leisure Centre stadium expansion is one of Council’s largest ever recreational projects to date, valued at more than $12.8 million.

The new stadium delivers much needed infrastructure for the growing Baw Baw Shire community, particularly for local basketball clubs, which boasts the highest numbers of participation of any sport in Baw Baw. The project includes:  

  • Construction of two new indoor (basketball/netball) courts
  • Spectator seating and a lounge viewing area
  • A new cafe and kitchen
  • Referee change room
  • First aid room
  • Storage facilities
  • Swim club store
  • Public amenities including Changing Places accessible change room
  • Improved pedestrian and parking access links between new and existing facilities. 

Official Opening

The Warragul Leisure Centre was officially opened on Sunday 28th July 2024.


Timeline

Mar 2022 

Early works contract awarded to Kubale Constructions and on-site works commence. Early works include earthworks, storm water drain installation and sewer diversion, asbestos removal and site clearing works.

Late 2022     

The main construction tender will be presented to Council for award. Once this has been decided, the site will be handed over to the contractors for development.

2023 

Major works take place. During this time major construction works will take place seeing the site begin to transform and the vision come to life. Key milestones will be achieved such as slab pouring, steel framing, external cladding, roof completion and sports hall floor installation.  

Internal and external works continue. Following the completion of the main external works, the focus will move inside and see construction of the new cafe and internal fit outs. External works also in progress with the carpark, lighting and pedestrian access paths.

Mid 2024     

The project will be entering the final stages of fit out and completion, including finishing works such as fixtures, painting and external landscaping works. A formal facility opening will be organised.

Valued at $12.8 million, this project is being delivered by Baw Baw Shire Council in partnership with the Victorian Government.

Project Update - January 2023

As part of the main contract, Kubale Constructions have taken over possession of the site. The Stage 2 Building permit has been completed which allows for works to begin. Kubale have begun construction works on the supporting structure, including the initial concrete, excavation and screw piles. 

These works are expected to be completed in April, however are subject to change.

Project Update - February 2023

On Friday 11 February, the sod was officially turned as construction of the stadium expansion began. To mark the occasion, Council, community members representing the Project Reference Group, and member for Eastern Victoria Region Harriet Shing MP, gathered to celebrate the progress.

Kubale Constructions have been on site undertaking construction works including slab pouring, steel framing, external cladding, roof completion and floor installation as part of the expansion project.  

Project Update - May 2023

Progress continues at the Warragul Leisure Centre, with in ground services installed and the concrete foundations for the new basketball courts being poured. 

Project Update - June 2023

The second slab has been poured and steel framing will soon arrive on site. 

Project Update - July 2023

The project has moved from the ground level up with steel framing reaching for the sky.

Project Update - October 2023

Works are progressing well with the steel structure and roof complete. Internal steel framing, mechanical ducting for air conditioning, and exterior brick work is underway.

Project Update - November 2023

In November, Project Reference Group members and Councillors were taken on a tour of the facility to check out the progress being made. 

Project Update - January 2024

The external facade is all but complete and the internal works are ramping up. Adjustable rings have been installed in the new stadium space and cladding is underway.

Project Update - April 2024

Since our last update, the Kubale Constructions team have been busy progressing the internal works, including the stadiums timber flooring and wall panels, installing shot clocks, tiling and fixtures. Externally the concrete has been poured for the rear car park and surrounding footpaths. Take a sneak peek at the progress below.
