Baw Baw Shire Council redeveloped the netball facilities at Western Park, Warragul. The redeveloped area boasts a state of the art amenities pavilion and two fully compliant, realigned netball courts. The new facilities will ensure players of all ages have a safe place to play, as well as adequate facilities to use for years to come.

This project was delivered in partnership with the Victorian Government, who contributed $1.44 million towards the delivery of the project. The remaining $160,000 was contributed by Council through the 2020/21 Capital Works Program.

New pavilion celebrates a local legend

Western Park was abuzz as sporting clubs, community members, Council and State government gathered to celebrate the highly anticipated official opening event and naming of the Liza Pharaoh Pavilion.

Background

A new netball pavilion at Western Park is a recommendation in the Warragul Outdoor Recreation Plan Review 2019, which was adopted by Council on 26 June 2019. The Review involved a significant amount of community consultation and has helped scope this project.

Following extensive advocacy from both the Warragul Football and Netball Club and Warragul Industrials Football Netball Club, Council allocated $60,000 towards the design and investigation works in its 2019/20 Capital Works Program.

Council has since worked closely with the Project Reference Group throughout the detailed design phase, with consultants Idwala and BuildingDesigned assisting with the project development process.

In August 2020 Baw Baw Shire Council was successful in an application to the Covid-19 Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program, securing $1.44 million through this fund for the project, allowing it to progress to the delivery stage.

What was included in the upgrade?

The previous courts and small netball pavilion were no longer compliant with current sporting code requirements and were nearing the end of their useful life. The two courts were realigned to make better use of the space at the reserve to incorporate the new pavilion.

Spectator viewing areas and lighting have also been fully upgraded to meet training standards across all courts.

Keep up to date with the project progress

Update June 2022

Following delays caused by unforeseen soil conditions on site, which caused re-design and re-engineering, the netball courts and new pavilion have continued to progress steadily.

To date the following items have been completed:

Netball Courts

  • Pavement for netball courts and associated drainage.
  • Designs for required retaining walls.
  • Preparations for test foundations for netball lighting towers to ensure they are suitable for sub-optimal soil conditions should they arise.

Netball Pavilion

  • Inground services have been installed.
  • Pavilion slab has been poured.
  • Wall framing has been completed.
  • Verandah footing has been poured.
  • Roofing has been installed.
  • External cladding has begun.

Update November 2022

Construction of the netball courts was completed in 2021/22, with acrylic coating due to be undertaken in November when weather conditions allow.

Construction of the pavilion was also completed in 2021/22, with the internal fit out of the pavilion has been completed towards end of October 2022.

Retaining wall construction has commenced, and paving works are scheduled to be commence early November. BMX Track remediation works are also scheduled to commence mid-November subject to favourable weather conditions.

Update February 2023

Following the remainder of the internal fit out and acrylic coating applied to the netball courts, the project was officially complete. An official opening was held on Thursday 25 May 2023 to celebrate.

In February, Council unanimously voted to name the newly constructed pavilion after Liza Pharoah, following a submission that was made by the club to Council’s Place Names Advisory Committee, which provides advice and recommendations on place-naming matters to Council.
